Manila - The Department of Tourism, headed by the Office of Industry Manpower Development, held an appreciation gathering for resource speakers and partner agencies at the Diamond Hotel last January 5, 2017. Along with fellow ASEAN Master Trainers and Assessors as well as a variety of tourism stakeholders like representatives of Tourist police (TOPCOP), tour guides, accommodation personnel, waiters, cooks, tourist transport drivers, spa/massage therapists, retail staff, community guides, etc. we were called upon individually, to receive a Plaque of Recognition.

Opening the event was Director Rica C. Bueno, from the Office of Tourism Standards and Regulations (OTSR), who expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the resource persons and stakeholders. According to Dir. Bueno, their pool of resource speakers and range of training modules have expanded since 2010 from around 15 trainers & modules to more than 55 speakers/experts and 31 modules today and still growing.

The Induction of the new TIBFI Board for 2017-2019 was held last May 2, 2017 with the Department of Tourism Usec. Alma Rita Jimenez as the inducting officer. Usec. Jimenez welcomed and congratulated the new board with a short but meaningful message. As quoted by Usec. Jimenez, "TIBFI service is to be passionate and find purpose as this will sustain the organization".

The new TIBFI board held a meeting last May 2, 2017 at the Department of Tourism, Makati. The meeting focused on the planning of the 4th TIBFI HR Congress to be scheduled on the 3rd week of September 2017 at Iloilo Convention Center, Iloilo City.

The 4th TIBFI Human Resource Congress focuses on the training and development of human resources as well as a discussion of issues and factors that influence entrepreneurship and employment in tourism firms. Four days in length, the event will feature 3 main activities: (1) A re-training program on tourism skills for assessors and trainors, (2) MRA awareness and toolbox immersion programs, and (3) a full-day congress that discusses management practices on human resources that lead to sustainable outcomes. Pre- and post-conference tours will also be offered to participants.

The 1st General Membership Meeting of Tourism Industry Board Foundation, Inc. (TIBFI) was held on 15 March 2017 at University Hotel, UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City. It was hosted by the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Educators of the Philippines (COHREP) and the GMM was attended by the official and alternate representative of the members of organization, 14 out of 16 members of TIBFI.

The election of the new TIBFI Board for 2017- 2019 was held at the latter part of the General Membership Meeting on 15 March 2017 at University Hotel, UP

Campus, Diliman, Quezon City.
The Board of Advisors served as the Election Committee were Mr. Ryan Sebastian from DOT, Ms. Marissa Gamurot from TESDA and TIBFI secretariat Ms. Karem Alina Phua.
The new TIBFI Board for year 2017- 2019 are the following:  Ms. Ma. Christina Aquino of HRAP is the new Chairman, Mr. Paul Lim So of PTAA re-elected as Vice- Chairman, Ms. Monette Hamiln of PACEOS as Secretary, Dean Edieser Dela Santa of UP- AIT as Treasurer, Dr. Gloria Baken Wong- Siy of AAHRMEI as Auditor, Ms. Anabelle Ochoa Moreno of AHRM as PRO and the Board of Directors are Mr. Daniel Edralin, Ms. Eleonor Ogarte and Mr. Hessel Larcia of NUWHRAIN APL.

Ambassador Ranaraja, middle, gave a small welcome message to the delegatesThe group of Sri Lankan delegates arrived to the Philippines via Malaysia Airlines flight MH806 at 12:58 PM in spite of a 1-hour flight delay. Upon arrival, the group was greeted and had a lei reception prepared by the Department of Tourism (DOT) at NAIA Terminal 1.  

Ms. Anabelle Moreno, TIBFI Chairperson and Jay-ar Magsayo, TIBFI Secretariat, were at the airport to welcome the group and accompany them for the course of their visit. The group then headed to Seda Hotel located at Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City to rest and get refreshed before heading to the Sri Lankan Ambassador’s residence for a welcome dinner.

Ambassador Aruni Ranaraja, Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Philippines, personally invited the Sri Lankan delegates to her residence for a welcome dinner. Ambassador Ranaraja gave a small welcome message to the delegates. TIBFI Board Members, Dr. Gloria Baken Wong-Siy, Mr. Paul Lim So, and Mr. Arjun Shroff were also present at the welcome dinner to formally meet the group.  

MANILA - A Sri Lankan group of delegates composed of 21 tourism stakeholders from different sectors conducted a 7-day visit to the Philippines for a tourism benchmarking activity from July 24 to 31.

Mr. Deepthi Lamahewa, the Deputy Program Director of World University Service of Canada (WUSC) based in Sri Lanka headed the delegation in a 7-day visit to the Philippines for a benchmarking program. The Tourism Industry Board Foundation, Inc. (TIBFI) together with the Department of Tourism (DOT) hosted the visit.

Despite some difficulties in processing the visa documents of the participants and unforeseeable changes in schedules, the visit was able to push through as scheduled. The delegates arrived to the Philippines at 12:58 PM via Malaysia Airlines. A lei reception was prepared for the group by the Department of Tourism staffs based in Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 1.

The key goal of the benchmarking visit was to learn best practices from industry experts when it comes to the field of hospitality and tourism management. The benchmarking visit was composed of two locations where ocular visit and a series of talks took place, Manila and Bohol. Different sectors in the tourism industry such as hotels, hospitality industry associations, and the Department of Tourism were able to conduct fora for the Sri Lankan delegates. Statistics, development planning and marketing strategies were among the subjects of the fora.

The Tourism Industry Board Foundation, Inc. Officers had a courtesy call meeting with Usec. Alma Rita Jimenez on 02 August 2016, Tuesday, 10:00 AM at the Department of Tourism building, Makati City. Present at the courtesy call were Ms. Anabelle Ochoa-Moreno (Chairperson), Dr. Gloria Baken Wong-Siy (Board Member), Ms. Ma. Christina Aquino (Secretary), Mr. Arjun Shroff (Board Member), together with Dir. Rica Bueno and Ms. Arlene Alipio, TIBFI Advisers from the Department of Tourism.

Ms. Anabelle Ochoa-Moreno presented an overview of TIBFI as an organization and its affiliated members. After the presentation, a discussion between TIBFI Officers and Usec. Jimenez took place regarding the plans of the new DOT administration for the development of Philippine tourism industry.

The 1st Batch of National Master Trainers and Master Assessors on Food Production with Chef Julie Ann Mendoza (ASEAN Master Assessor), Chef Jesus Cuyco (ASEAN Master Trainer), Chef Elena Rivera (ASEAN Master Assessor) and Chef Jose Gabriel Prats (ASEAN Master Assessor), Dir. Rica Bueno (DOT), Ms. Arlene Alipio (DOT), Dir. Maria Susan P. Dela Rama (TESDA) and Ms. Maria Christina G. Aquino (TIBFI).As part of the preparations for the full implementation of the ASEAN MRA for Tourism Professionals, The Department of Tourism (DOT), Technical Educational Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) and Tourism Industry Board Foundation Incorporated (TIBFI) organized the 1st Batch of National Master Trainers and Master Assessors Training on Food Production. This was held last October 11 – 16, 2015 at Diamond Hotel, Manila.

The ASEAN Masters who conducted the training were Chef Julie Ann F. Mendoza and Chef Jesus Cuyco for the Master Trainers’ Training, while Chef Elena Rivera and Chef Jose Gabriel Prats conducted the Master Assessors’ Training.

Christina G. Aquino.Out of several nominees gathered nationwide, twenty-five (25) qualified candidates were selected from various schools and training centers from all over the country. Most of the candidates came from NCR, while the rest came from different regions like CAR, Central Luzon (Region III), CALABARZON (Region IV-A), Bicol Region (Region V), Western Visayas (Region VI), Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) and Davao Region (Region IX). The candidates were nominated by various regional TESDA offices, ASEAN Masters and DOT. To qualify, candidates needed to be TESDA certified, should have at least 5 years industry experience in food production, and must be computer literate.  The candidates undertook various lectures, demonstrations, on Competency Based Training, Competency Based Assessment, and prepared their own portfolio during the six-days training to become a Master Trainer and Master Assessor on Food Production.
